"Take off your shoes, and stay awhile"

As a requirement of graduation, Maine College of Art & Design, BFA candidate seniors have to design a thesis installation to be shown at the graduation reception. For my thesis installation my initial drive was that I did not like seeing my work in the traditional “white cube” setting of an art school gallery. I struggled to find a way to control the way I showed my work. I branched away from thrown work to ceramic furniture and immediately knew that it would be how I could fully control my work’s environment. I took my fathers slogan “take your shoes off and stay awhile!” to heart and built a ceramic living room to house a variety of my thrown ceramic work. The installation consisted of: a coffee table, a cocktail bar, an assortment of stools, a floor lamp and a bench, all of which I was able to build using my knowledge gathered over my time at MECA&D.

My thesis paper is available to download below.
