Artist Statment
My work reflects a habit of making where strong and durable simplicity merges with the nuance of utilitarian function. I strive to work robustly in construction to encourage use but also surface the vessel in a glossy glaze to make the user appreciate its appearance. The vessels I create are designed to fit comfortably into a user's life. Embracing a spareness of form and surface from ornamentation, my hierarchical measures relate to the anatomy of the vessel and its interaction with the hand. I intend my work to be something that integrates into the user's routine as if it is an extension of their body. While finishing my work, I put effort into smoothing the form. My intent while doing this is to create a smooth surface for my glazes to adhere to. I use a mix of different glazes to create flowing, deep pools of color that encase the vessel. I enjoy the application of light and dark glazes which when fired create cosmic patterns on the surface of my work.
